The scene in the throne room shifts. God is holding a scroll with seven seals (Rev. 5:1). The question echoes throughout creation: Is anyone worthy to break the seals on the scroll (v. 2)? The key word in the chapter is “worthy” (axios): no one in all creation is worthy to break the seals (v. 3). The seals represent redemptive history and God’s plan for history, including saving human beings, so if no one can open the scroll or break the seals, the human race is doomed. Hence John
